I used to live in Thorney at Hornet Road. My dad was in the army. He was later MD'd after 11 years as he badly injured his leg whilst training in Cyprus.
Thorney is a great place where everyone knows eachother. You need a pass from the army (you can get them from the gaurds at the gate-post) to enter Thorney as it is strictly an army base.
Thorney has 2 of its own private beaches. One of which is close to the army stables which offers both children and adults of all capabilities riding tuition.
On camp there is a school called Thorney Islam D C.P School. The head is Mr.Dean.Clegg. Outside of the school is a park. There is a doctors and gym on Thorney.
Thorney is near a small village called Emsworth. Busses from Hunter Road bus stop run there every half hour. Emsworth has everything you need from clothes shops to butchers and bakers. The town is only about 10 mins away (in a car) and it is called Havant.
There are also 2 other towns near these are Chichester and Portsmouth.

Thorney Island is an MoD site and it is difficult for civilians to visit.
It is possible to walk round the island along the sea wall. It takes about 4 hours and walkers must not stray from the wall.
Walkers will have to give their names and post codes at a security gate through a microphone before the guard will let you through.
It is the same procedure on leaving.
At the southern tip of Thorney is Pilsey Island which can be reached at low tide on foot.
It is a bird sanctuary (previously a bombing range) and again visitors must not stray from the shoreline.
At low tide a vast expanse of fine flat sand is exposed (unusual in Chichester Harbour which is mostly mud).
Looking from the sea wall towards the the old RAF hangers that remain you can see the walls of two hangers that were destroyed by the Luftwaffe during raids on the airfield.
Through binoculars you can see the pock marks left by cannon fire in the walls.
