Garlieston lies to the south of an area known as the Machars (meaning coastal plains, although it is not particularly flat, more undulating), and within the old county of Wigtownshire. This are is steeped in history, with stone circles and early Christian settlements and more recently, being on a quiet peninsula, the bays either side of the village, Garlieston and Rigg Bay, were used as secret testing sites for the Mulberry Harbours during the WWII
A small harbour village with a painted crescent shaped sterrace facing the sea front. Small fishing boats still operating from here - the lobster catch is well worth waiting for.
The coastal walks are lovely, as is the tour around Galloway House Gardens, open to the public march to October, and particularly beautiful in late spring and early summer.
