The historic town of Dartmouth, etched into the hillsides of the beautiful river Dart, is particularly attractive with its overhanging buldings, yacht harbour and wide quayside vistas. It is also renowned for its many individual shops and high quality restaurants such as the New Angel.
From the quay, it is easy to take a boat trip up the river into Totnes, catch a conecting open top bus to Paignton, and return on the steam railway. The nearest beach is the award winning Blackpool Sands which feels just like a tropical paradise on a good summer's day.
The South West Coast Path, which passes round the Dart estuary, offers many spectacular coastal walks and there is also a beautiful walk along the banks of the Dart known as the Dart Valley Trail. There are plenty of almost deserted beaches for those who are prepared to drive down the narrow lanes a little further down the coast.
There is a wealth of castles, historic houses and gardens in the area, ranging from Dartmouth Castle itself, Greenway on the banks of the river Dart where Agatha Christie used to live, to Coleton Fishacre with its art deco house and sub tropical gardens and more than a dozen others within an hour's drive.
Staying in or around Dartmouth, just one day is almost wasted, two days are not nearly enough and there's plenty to do in a whole week.
