Cardigan is located at the Southern end of 'Cardigan Bay where the Dolphins play'. Recognised as an internationally important area for marine wildlife, Cardigan Bay was established as the UK's first Marine Heritage Coast. There are regular sightings of the resident population of bottle nose dolphins, as well as porpoise, grey seals and other marine wildlife. Recently there was a rare sighting of Orca (Killer) whales and Rosso's dolphins passing through the bay.
Travelling north from Cardigan to Aberystwyth the coastline is dotted with villages, small ports, and harbour towns all with a rich seafaring history. The 'larger' coastal holiday destinations are Aberporth, Llangrannog, New Quay and Aberaeron - with many more small and friendly locations dotted in between. There are numerous coves and beaches, including Mwnt, Aberporth, Tresaith, Penbryn (National Trust), Llangrannog, Cwmtydy, Newquay, and Aberaeron. Newquay and Tresaith have Blue Flag awards; Mwnt and Aberaeron have Green Coast awards; while all beaches mentioned above have qualified for the UK Seaside Award (with the apparent exception of Cwmtydy).
Nearing completion in 2003 the 60 mile Ceredigion Coastal Path, crossing Heritage Coastline and National Trust lands, forms an almost complete link between the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and Glyndwrs Way.
Renowned for it's Bass and Black Bream, angling opportunities abound in Cardigan Bay for sea and shore fishermen.
Backed by rugged cliffs, many of the beaches are reached through delightful steep sided wooded valleys surrounded by farmland. Depending on the beach you choose, there may be a stretch of wonderfully smooth cobbles to cross before you reach the sand, while other beaches consist almost entirely of long sandy stretches. Other features include rock pools, waterfalls and fresh water streams running into the sea - much to the delight of children who are entertained for hours ... summer or winter, rain or shine. Further north at Aberaeron the shale beach with black 'sand' merges with the green fields of a low lying, narrow coastal plain. On a hot and sunny day, lie back to sunbathe on any of these beaches and you are sure to reminisce of distant, foreign lands, and begin to wonder where you are ... the French Riveria, the Algarve, perhaps Santorini, or even Lanzarote. It maybe the effect of the sun, but certainly you'll be inspired by the wonderful landscape around you no matter the weather.
Cardigan Town lies on the estuary of the Afon (River) Teifi.
