Camborne is a quiet Cornish town where many improvements have been made in recent years, such as the newly refurbished town square and fountain, which is always a popular place to sit and watch the world go by and maybe enjoy a delicious Pasty or a cream cake from one of the many bakers shops.
The town's most famous son is Richard Trevithick. He invented the World's first Car! Powered by a steam engine His 'Puffing Devil' road locomotive, was first tested in Camborne in 1801, and is still remembered in the popular Cornish folk song, 'Going up Camborne Hill'. His statue stands outside the town library. The inventor is celebrated by the annual Trevithick Day, usually held on the last Saturday in April.
Camborne is best known as a centre for the former Cornish tin and copper mining industry, having its working heyday during the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Camborne was transformed by the mining boom and saw the Camborne and Redruth district become the richest mining area in the world.
As the population grew, the town became overcrowded. Drunken brawls riots and lawlessness became more frequent. Methodism did what it could to keep the peace. On one occasion rioting became so furious that the police could not cope and the militia was sent for, (nicknamed the Red Jackets) the incident is still remembered in the name of a pub in Trevenson Street!

Camborne is centrally located in beautiful west Cornwall and is only 26 miles to Lands End (to the west) and 26 miles to the Eden Project (to the east). Just 5 miles north and you arrive at the spectacular north coast where you will find stretches of sandy beach, and quiet coves, and the dramatic cliff top walks.
