Buncrana has won the European standard 'Blue Flag' several times thanks to the cleanliness and natural beauty of the beach.
On your way into the peninsula, you'd be forgiven for thinking everyone is golf-mad, as there is a very highly rated club.
But Buncrana is more than golf. At certain times in the winter, the town is visited by Russian fishing smacks.
The waters, the Atlantic fishing and the surounding mountains all help to explain why many of the locals appear and sound Scottish.
There are some wonderful cafes or tea bars in the main street, as well as all the stores you would expect to find in a town.
There's plenty of B&B and hotal accomodation, but if you're looking for longer stay, ask around. You may be lucky, as I once was, and find someone with a converted barn, all mod-cons, on the side of a mountain, reserviour behind, bog for miles and neighbours two miles away.
For city folk like me, just let the postman and the milkman know you are there! In minter months, just watch the mountain snow swirlng around the high ground. It is spectacular!
Donegal also has the advantage of the Gulf stream current, so although it does rain in the summer, the winters are not too bad! But the rain is what gives the area that 'green'.
