A beautiful, historic market town, with a bustling atmosphere.
Excellent communication routes to Dorchester, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and beyond or drive the coast road and marvel at the unique, breathtaking views over the Fleet and Chesil Beach.
Bridport Harbour (West Bay) is undergoing some major re-vamping and has wonderful beaches and sandy areas for the kids.
There are many, many walks and National trust areas in and around Bridport and excellent accomodation to stay in. Some of which is dog-friendly, some sadly not. However, Bridport does have a "Doggie Day Care" centre where you can leave your pets and go off exploring for the day safe in the knowledge that they will be walked, cared for and loved in a home from home environment (see www.allfourpaws.co.uk).
The town is 15 miles west of the county town of Dorchester and it lays in a 'bowl' formed by many beautiful hills, with evidence of history back to Neolithic times, there are a number barrows and a stone circle to be seen from the A35 as you drive. The town itself dates back to the "Burh of Brydian", created by the Anglo Saxon Alfred the Great in the 9th century, coins minted from the time Athelstan. The ditch from this time is still visible as you look across the Car Park behind Somerfields see where the tarmac follows this ditch.
Main streets are amongst the widest this side of England and street markets have been held since the days of Queen Elizabeth the First! Market days are Saturday and Wednesday.
We have some 1000+ "listed" buildings such as the Town Hall which was built late in 1700. The impressive building marks the junction of East Street West Street and South Street, there is a North Street too, its just a little further down West Street.
