The Penwith Peninsula is the twenty plus mile long coastline stretching from St Ives to Penzance and covers the most south westerly tip of the British Isles. The Penwith Peninsula is known as much for its rugged coastline and rough seas throughout the winter months as for its unspoilt scenery & beautiful botanic climate in the summer.
The two biggest resorts are St Ives, situated just inwards of the north most tip and Penzance tucked just under it, but on the southern side of the Penisula.
St Ives cobbled streets are steeped in history and run north to its beautiful beach incorporating Carbis and St Ives Bay. Lets not forget the Tate Modern, built on the old gasworks bringing visitors from all over the world. Lets not forget the artistic talents of Barbara Hepworth, celebrated all year round at the Museum dedicated to her name and talents.
Penzance is tucked into Mounts Bay and sheltered somewhat more from the relentless battering of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a much busier town than St Ives and makes the most of catering for visitors travelling to and from the Peninsula.
A short stroll from Penzance is the historic St Michaels Mount, originally a monastery of the Benedictines of Mont St Michael in France, and only accessible at low tide via a sandy causeway. This is a truly spectacular place and well worth a visit.
Smaller towns and villages include Newlyn and Moushole which lay west of Penzance, both beautiful and quaint, perfect for a relaxing. Right on the tip of Lands End, the most south western point of the British Isles is the tiny town of Sennen and its accompanying sandy Sennen Cove and Whitesand Bay.
Just north of Lands End is St Just, linked to St Ives by either the busy B3306 or the South West Coast Path which runs around the entire tip of Cornwall, heading north to past Bude or south along the southern coast of Cornwall, and beyond.
