Swansea Whether you are looking for somewhere you can relax and unwind in a tranquil environment or have an exhilarating and exiting activity holiday in a spectacular setting, Swansea Bay has it all!
The area is really many destinations rolled into one – the colourful maritime city of Swansea, Wales’ “city by the sea”, the pretty Victorian resort of Mumbles, the lush Vales of Afan and Neath and the spectacular Gower Peninsula.
Combine all of the above with a wide range of quality accommodation and a huge variety of things to see and do and you can understand why millions of people choose to visit Swansea Bay each year.
Take advantages of what this amazingly compact City has to offer. Beautiful parks and gardens, enviable cultural and sporting facilities and excellent shopping opportunities including Swansea Market (the largest covered market in Wales) sample local delicacies such as cockles, laverbread and warm, stonebaked welsh-cakes.
Known as ‘The Friendly City by the Sea’ Swansea is renowned as South West Wales’ premier destination for entertainment and nightlife. Wind Street with its cafes, pubs and eating places situated in attractive and stylishly refurbished ‘listed’ buildings, is the place to be seen!
The City’s unique and desirable position on the edge of a 5 mile bay and its attractive, award winning Marina and Maritime Quarter, easily qualify Swansea for its “Wales’ City by the Sea” title. And with events taking place all year round, including the Wales GB rally and the Flora 10k race, Proms in the park and the various festivals and carnivals you’ll be spoilt for choice!
At the Western end of the bay lies the Mumbles. This Victorian seaside resort, often referred to as “the Gateway to Gower” has much to offer. From splendid sea views along its promenade (a cycle/walkway stretching the 5 miles back to Swansea) to a restored pier and fabulous Italian ice cream parlours!
Oystermouth, as the village centre, is so named for its history as an oyster-fishing port. You’ll find a range of specialist shops, cafes and restaurants – dominated by the impressive castle ruins.
Mumbles Pottery and the Lovespoon Gallery are just two examples of the village’s artistic outlets. Just around the headland, Mumbles Lighthouse overlooks the award winning, Blue Flag Bracelet Bay.
Countryside
The 19 mile-long Gower Peninsula with its spectacular coastline and unspoilt countryside, was designated the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty more than 45 years ago. The Area offers much more than just fabulous beaches. Open moors, grazed common land, salt marshes and dune banks – a diverse selection of habitats supporting a variety of flora and fauna. Visit the Special Area of Conservation at Kilvey Hill close to the City and Lliw Valley Reservoirs to the north of the County. These reservoirs are home to a huge range of plant and animal activity throughout the year and also offer excellent leisure opportunities. Ask the Tourist Information Centres for details of the Countryside and Environmental event programmes on offer – come and visit, get involved!
“Country Life” readers voted Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula as the fourth Best View in Britain lending further weight to the statement in the Sunday Times which said that “…Gower is Glorious!”

Mumbles Mumbles has a delicious range of restaurants, pubs & delightful shops. It overlooks the sea front promenade that encircles the Bay, with a happy walk alongside all facilities at Oystermouth village, including public library, crazy golf, tennis and churches. Mumbles Pier, Lighthouse and Coastguard Station are all here.
The sea and beaches at Bracelet Bay, Limeslade, Rotherslade and Langland are all within 1 to 3 miles. Spectacular Gower Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, encompasses this coast and much more towards 3 Cliffs, Port Eynon, Worm's Head and Rhosili. Dylan Thomas loved to visit Mumbles.

|
Oxwich Bay The lovely old village of Oxwich, with its castle and medievil church, is nestled behind the 3 mile expanse of Oxwich Bay, about 11 miles from Swansea, surrounded by beautiful countryside criss-crossed with public footpaths, and awe inspiring views.
Although it was once a busy port, the maritime traffic now consists of small boats gliding around the bay for pleasure, and there are organised boat trips starting from Oxwich car park, on the edge of the bay, during the holiday season.
Behind the beach there is a National Nature reserve which consists of sand dunes covered with sea holly and numerous other fantastic coastal plants, and Oxwich Marsh teaming with a huge variety of fauna and flora. The whole area is a wonderfull haven for peaceloving beach and nature lovers of all ages.
The Oxwich Bay Hotel, perched on the edge of the bay, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink, meal or snack all year round, and they cater for special celebrations such as weddings.

|
Port-Eynon Bay The write-up of Port Eynon Beach is not strictly accurate, although the sand is less than 20 years ago there is still plenty there especially at the quieter Horton end of the beach.
The rocky part is towards Porteynon point and in front of the Youth Hostel which years ago used to be the lifeboat house until the disaster of 1916. Now the lifeboat is housed at Horton and is taken to the sea by tractor.
|
|
Port-Eynon Bay Blue flag beach safe swimming with areas monitored by lifeguards. Beach is accessable from car parks at Horton and Port Eynon. Boat rides from Port Eynon around Worms Head at Rhossil often seeing seals and dolphins.
Cliff top walks with fantastic views, fishing trips available and our lifeboat at Horton. 2 mins away is an indoor pool at scurlage and 15 mins takes you to the Heritiage Centre at Parkmill not to mention the New Leisure Centre with water park at Swansea 30 mins drive.
Horseriding and trecking also for beginners, surfing sailboarding or laze away the days sunbathing.
A selection of shops restaurants cafe's both in and surrounding areas.
|
|
Port-Eynon Bay Port Eynon used to be an oyster fishing village, and as there are strong cross currents outside the bay, there were many ships wrecked there.
Nowadays, it has a thriving tourist business with its gift shops, tea rooms and seafood restaurants.
Although the beach is rather rocky in places it is very accessable, with a large car park, and ther are lovely coastal paths to follow past the Victorian lifeboat station and the partly restored old Salt House, along to the National Trust headland where you can see views east towards Port Eynon and Oxwich Point, and west towards Rhossili.
At the other end of the bay is the quieter traditional village of Horton, where the beach is more sandy. As it is also more hilly, it does not seem to attract so many visitors, but it is definately worth a visit.
|
|
Llangennith In Llangennith there you can walk on miles of sandy beach - great out of season for thinking with no houses in sight! With its sand dunes and Rhossilli Down overlooking.
For the young fit types there is plenty of surfing, surfing and more surfing, pony trekking, hiking over the Down to Rhossilli, watching the handgliders, etc....
