Gravesend Gravesend is a modest, laid back town, with a lot of history to it.
I have lived in Gravesend all my life, and one thing I do know is that we are proud of our heritage.
Places to visit: Underground tunnels at Fort Gardens, The Promenade, Gravesend Market (been there since 1700's - I think!) Library, for all old photos of Gravesend in its prime - fascinating stuff!
Take a trip on the Princess Pocahontas ferry - go to Tilbury, Southend, or I do believe they do trips to London, too! (has an on board bar!)
We have pubs, restaurants, and nightlife that will not fail to please.
We are a welcoming bunch, so come, rest and relax here and enjoy yourself!
|
|

Leysdown-On-Sea Leysdown is a lovely place to visit. My family and i have been coming here for holidays since the late 80's and we still come here every summer.
There are lots of things to do other than play the arcades.Theres bingo for the older generation and a fabulous array of pubs n club houses with various entertainments from singing to dancing and competitions for the kids its great!!
There's lovely place's to eat from a fabulous hot dog vedor to cafe's that serve a full roast or maybe you just fancy plain old fish n chips! Either way we think leysdown is a wonderfull place and we hope your family enjoys it as much as our family have over the years. HAPPY HOLIDAY HUNTING!!!!

Broadstairs Broadstairs reputation as a charming and uspoiled seaside resort has brought visitors here for the last 200 years.
Many literary and artisitic luminaries found inspiration in the atmpshere, history and scenery of Broadstairs.
Today, with its seven glorious sandy bays, exhilarating clifftop walks, winding streets and ancient fishrman's cottages nestilng around the harbour, restaurants, pubs, wine bars and quirky shops, together with music and literary festivales, fireworks throughout the sumer and traditional seaside entertainment, Broadstairs offers visitors a truly memorable stay.
|
|
Broadstairs Broadstairs has an attractive holiday beach with flattering harbour, it was also once home to the famous Charles Dickens, of whom there are many dedications such as a celebrating festival every June and also his old home Bleak House is now a museum.
The town is full of local bars and cafe should you want to kick your feet back whilst drinking coffe or enjoy te night life of the bars.
If all else fails to ammuse the kids there is a fun filled arcade for them to spend thier pocket money (this applies to dads young at heart also) Broadstairs students also share the facilities which Gary Rhodes once used here at Thanet college.

Dover Dover Castle - Absolutely magnificent - one of English Heritage's premier sites. Strategically placed on the famous White Cliffs of Dover it is rightfully named the "Key of England".
Two thousand years of history, from the Roman Lighthouse, the Iron Age Fort, a Saxon Church to the secret Wartime Tunnels, make this a must for your itinary.
The Norman Keep houses the latest exhibitions: Preparations for the visit of Henry VIII & the Seige of 1216. Deep inside the White Cliffs see where wartime personnel were stationed during World War II. The evacuation of Dunkirk was masterminded here.
For further information ring +44 (0) 1304 201628.
Roman Painted House - Fascinating, discovered by the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in 1970 (KARU) and built about A.D.200 as part of a large official hotel for leading Roman travellers crossing the English Channel. It stood outside the North Gate of the great naval fort of the Classis Britannica, but in A.D.270 the Roman army during the construction of a larger fort demolished it. Three of its main rooms were then buried substantially intact under its ramparts. Visitors can see the the various heating ducts & channels that kept the building comfortably warm 1,800 years ago.
For further information ring +44 (0) 1304 203279.

Dymchurch Dymchurch is a small resort on the Kent coast between Hythe in the east and New Romney in the west. Within easy travelling distance of Le Shuttle terminal at Folkestone, Canterbury and Rye popular tourist destinations.
It has a superb sandy beach which has numerous awards in the past. With puddles left when the sea goes out its ideal for children to paddle or just build sand castles.
In the village there are several conveneince stores and a Tesco's express. Locally there are several pubs and restauarants within the village.
The main attractions for children would be the small amusement park and the station on the RH&D Railway line

St Mary's Bay Aged 8, I stayed for a week in the summer of 1956 at St. Mary's Bay School Holiday Camp with St. Margaret Mary's Primary School Pilch Lane Liverpool. All the huts carried the names of towns on them, our's was called Barrow. It was sited next to a pen full of turkeys - some kind of farm I suppose. Inside the hut from the front were a couple of small rooms for the teachers and their families (Mr Bullen, his wife and children Charles and Ann). Then separated along the length of the hut were two dormitories, one for the boys the other for the girls. At the far end were the bathroom blocks for each dorm. and another entrance.
It didn't rain at all the whole week and thanks to the teachers who organised it - producing a handbook, collecting the money (approx £5 for the entire holiday), looking after pocket money as well as arranging the whole thing complete with a trip to Canterbury Cathedral - we had a fantastic time.
I remember the shingle beach with some sort of concrete structure on it that we used to climb on near the waters edge. There was also a funfair by the beach.
We ate well in the large dining hall furnished with long tables and had great times playing football and rounders after tea on the extensive lawned areas. St. Mary's Bay - Ah yes!
|
|
St Mary's Bay Regarding the St Mary's Bay camp, remembered by Janet in Australia. I attended the camp for a two-week school trip too, but in 1970. I remember it well, the bunk bed dorms, itchy blankets and lots of fun. I also remember other schools being there at the time and us all convening in the large dining hall for dinner. Great walks along the beach across the road and playing football.
It did seem like a place frozen in time. I'm sure it hadn't changed since the 40s and 50s. I presume it had been an army camp during the war.
Unfortunately it's not there anymore. I drove along the coast in the late 80s and looked for it. It had been demolished and replaced with houses. But the memories are still good fortunately. There is a photo of the camp on this site: http://www.francisfrith.com
|
|
St Mary's Bay In answer to a previous contributor, I was also incare in late 1940's early 1950's in Potters Bar, Herts & spent several holidays at St Marys Bay Holiday camp riding the little railway, visiting Dymchurch amusements, Dungeness Lighthouse, Romney model railway exhibit.
I visited the site in 1998, hasn't changed too much, the railway is still in existence. The campsite is now a housing estate, but the area is still recognisable.
|
|
St Mary's Bay In the late 1940's and 1950's I was in a children's home in Surrey and every year we would go for 2 weeks holiday to a holiday camp in St. Mary's Bay Dymchurch.
We stayed in what I can recollect as being some kind of army camp. There were other children from lots of other children's homes.
We used to have such a lovely time. We slept on camp beds with itchy grey blankets, no sheets as it made for more washing.
We went to the beach across the road ( taking our sandwiches ) and played there all day and then home to the camp again.
During our stay we had a day trip out and had a ride on the minature railway. As I remember, it never rained in St. Mary's Bay.!!!
What happened to the camp, does anyone know? (Let us at goCoastal.co.uk know and We'll pass it on to the writer of this intersting little story!)
|
|
Dungeness Dungeness is a desolate place! The nearest thing one might encounter in UK to a desert with the nuclear power providing a striking if bizarre backdrop.
The pub provides excellent fish a chips and there is the light railway cafe that is open when the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch light railway runs.
The power stations has a vistors centre if you dare, and the nature reserve provides a refuge for birds if you are that way inclined.
