Spiddal An Spidéal, or Spiddal or Spiddle as it's called in English, is a small seaside village on the West coast of Ireland.
Located just 12 miles West of Galway city An Spidéal is a vibrant friendly town where the people speak both Irish and English.
Indeed if you visit during the summer months you will probably notice groups of teenagers who come to the village for 3 week courses to learn Irish.
The signposts are all in the Irish language and you will hear it spoken in the shops, pubs and restaurants. Most people will be more than happy to teach you a couple of words if you ask.
The village is really on the Eastern boundary of the region called Connemara and as such is a good starting point for your journey into this unique part of Ireland rich in tradition and spectacular raw beauty only found in this area.
The town itself has 2 shops one with a petrol station. You will find most of what you need in terms of food and provisions in these shops and there are also supermarkets in Galway city and another one 3 miles West of the village called Siopa an Phobal. There are also a number of pubs in the town with Hughes being our favourite (take a right at the bank). On most weekend nights and sometimes during the week in summer time you will hear live traditional Irish music being played in the pubs.
In terms of restaurants you can choose from The Cruiscin Lan Hotel or the Boluisce Restaurant all located in the village itself or Jackie's Bistro located behind the Craft Centre. There also Padraigin's restaurant and bar by the beach in Furbo 3 mile East and Donnelly's in Barna village 7 miles East on the way to Galway. A little further away in the town ot Moycullen we have Moycullen House and The White Gables, both of which are fine restaurants.
