Rye
Rising majestically from the flatlands of the surrounding marshes, the historic town of Rye sits atop a knoll of land that was once washed by the sea. Rye was first chartered by Edward the Confessor, later fortified against French attack by King Stephen, made a Cinque Port during the reign of Henry III and furnished nine of the ships which lay siege to Calais under Edward III. By the early 14th Century, when it was designated as a head Cinque Port, Rye had become one of the most important ports on the south coast
Major landmarks of the medieval period include The Ypres Tower, possibly dating to the beginning of the 13th Century, The Landgate Tower, dating to the late 14th Century and the only one remaining gate of the four gates which once lead into the town, The Mermaid Inn, Rye's largest medieval building, and the Church of St Mary's, sitting atop the town. Seen from afar the outline of Rye still has the appearance of a walled medieval town rising from the marshes.
In later years Rye became a centre of the Kent and Sussex smuggling trade, sometime home to the infamous Hawkhurst Gang, a ruthless group of over 600 smugglers who, in the mid 18th Century made the still standing Mermaid Inn their local haunt.
Rye continued it's connection with sea trade, both legal and illegal, well into the 19th Century, by which time it had become a centre of the ship building industry with warships for the Crimea setting sale from it's harbour.
Rye has played it's part for the cultural life of Great Britain too. Russell Thorndike based his well known Dr Syn books in the Rye area, Rumer Godden and EF Benson (author of the Mapp & Lucia books) both lived in Rye and Renaissance playwright John Fletcher was born in Rye. Perhaps the town's most famous inhabitant was the novelist Henry James who fell in love with Rye and made his home at Lamb House, nestled away just off Mermaid Street. James wrote here between 1897-1914, often dictating copy in the garden room that was sadly destroyed by a World War II bomb. Today, Lamb House is a National Trust property, something of a literary shrine adorned with portraits of James as well as of a host of other distinguished late 19th and early 20th Century visitors, including Ford Madox Ford, Conrad and Kipling.
Today Rye is a thriving market town, a place that brings the past right into the present day.

Eastbourne
My son and I went down to Eastbourne recently for a week. We had a fantastic time. The beaches are marvelous. The Airbourne Airshow was brilliant, and the weather was soooo warm.
I would recommend a holiday here to anyone. We are booking up already for next year. Can't wait. We might even jump on the Eurostar and go to France for a day.

Eastbourne
Eastbourne is an attractive and vibrant place.
The seafront is particularly nice with the well laid flower beds and the promanade walks.
The bandstand attracts a lot of visitors to the town, and from a seaside town perspective it is ideally suited to the elderly, and disabled visitor as amenities are at stree level and disabled guests are well catered for.
The Town centre boasts a huge range of shops, both in an enclosed centre and pedestrian shopping precinct.
At night is is full of young people and students enjoying the many bars and nightclubs, staying in town may be noisy at times & I would suggest avoiding it during the busy evenings. On the upside we have two good theatres that organise some fantastic shows.
I personally find the Congress too noisy and the seating isn't arranged that well, particularly if a tall persons sits in front of you. The Devonshire theatre is just perfect, big enough to create an atmosphere, but small enough to be intimate, the seating is arranged in a sloping affect everyone can see from wherever they are.
The holiday Inn fish and chip shop is worth a visit (over the road from the theatre) nearest parking in lifeboat car park - free for disabled visitors, or take your chance around the roads.
The train station is central, regular buses will take you for a tour of the town. Outdoor bowls is a great attraction in the many splendid parks, and there is a huge leisure centre, which sadly has seen better days! However 6 miles away in Hailsham is a lovely complex with a very warm pool.

Hove
Hove a great place summer or winter. Its town center is growing fast, offering great restaurants coffee bars and delicatessens.
The people in Hove are friendly and respectful of each other.
The seafront is very peaceful in the winter, a great place to go and think!
In the summer it is a great place for families to hang out. Most people spend their evenings sitting around, chatting or enjoying a barbecue.
