Weymouth Weymouth is a traditional seaside resort with a picturesque fishing-harbour.
Down from the Georgian seafront the beautiful golden sands shelve gently into the clean blue waters of the English Channel, offering a very safe environment for families to swim and sunbathe.
The town offers all the usual amenities of a top resort with plenty of entertainment to suit all tastes.
Weymouth lies in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, now a World Heritage Site. Inland is Thomas Hardy's Dorset with rolling hills and dozens of pretty villages.
The Sea-Life Centre and Brewers Quay are two of the visitor attractions in the town, whilst nearby are Monkey World and Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub-Tropical Gardens. About 45 minutes drive will bring you to the borders of the counties of Devon, Somerset and Hampshire.
Weymouth has an excellent programme of events all through the year, including the International Kite Festival, the Oyster Festival, the annual beach moto-cross, sailing championships and weekly firework displays during the summer holidays.
Portland Harbour is home to the National Sailing Academy and is recognised as one of the finest areas in the country for windsurfing, sailing and other watersports.
Isle Of Portland The Royal Manor of Portland joined to the mainland by Chesil Beach is only 6 miles from Weymouth, but has its own unique history and character. Its main claim to history is the famous Portland Stone which has been quarried for hundreds of years and used in buildings all over the world. Millions of tons were used in the re-building of London City after the Great Fire, and St Pauls Cathedral is probably the best known which was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1608 (St Paul's dates from 1708, not 1608... Dick Sympson). Remains of his quarries known as "Weares" can still be seen and the loading point is in Church Ope Cove below the Park.
Towering above Churh Ope Cove is Pennsylvania Castle which is now a private residence. The Castle was built by William Penn, Grandson of William Penn, the Founder of Pennsylvania in the USA.
Other famous Landmarks on this charismatic "Isle" include Portland Bill Lighthouse on the southern tip built to warn shipping of the treacherous rocks which have claimed many victims.
The Lighthouse allows visitors to climb the hundreds of steps to the lamp room with spectacular views. The climb is quite strenuous and not recommended for sufferers of vertigo!
There are two more Lighthouses now private homes, the upper lighthouse was once the home of Dr. Marie Stokes. Portland is also well known by bird watchers as it is an important resting point for migrating birds of all kinds.

Bridport A beautiful, historic market town, with a bustling atmosphere.
Excellent communication routes to Dorchester, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and beyond or drive the coast road and marvel at the unique, breathtaking views over the Fleet and Chesil Beach.
Bridport Harbour (West Bay) is undergoing some major re-vamping and has wonderful beaches and sandy areas for the kids.
There are many, many walks and National trust areas in and around Bridport and excellent accomodation to stay in. Some of which is dog-friendly, some sadly not. However, Bridport does have a "Doggie Day Care" centre where you can leave your pets and go off exploring for the day safe in the knowledge that they will be walked, cared for and loved in a home from home environment (see www.allfourpaws.co.uk).
The town is 15 miles west of the county town of Dorchester and it lays in a 'bowl' formed by many beautiful hills, with evidence of history back to Neolithic times, there are a number barrows and a stone circle to be seen from the A35 as you drive. The town itself dates back to the "Burh of Brydian", created by the Anglo Saxon Alfred the Great in the 9th century, coins minted from the time Athelstan. The ditch from this time is still visible as you look across the Car Park behind Somerfields see where the tarmac follows this ditch.
Main streets are amongst the widest this side of England and street markets have been held since the days of Queen Elizabeth the First! Market days are Saturday and Wednesday.
We have some 1000+ "listed" buildings such as the Town Hall which was built late in 1700. The impressive building marks the junction of East Street West Street and South Street, there is a North Street too, its just a little further down West Street.
Lyme Regis Lyme Regis is located on the Dorset/Devon boarder ideally situated for visiting attractions in both counties with somerset a stone throw away.
Nearby attractions include Devons Crealy adventure park, Somersets Cricket st Thomas Wildlife park and Dorset's Abbotsbury swanery, sub tropical gardens and childrens Farm.
Lyme Regis itself is a small fishing village which plays host to several good resturants, pubs and old fashioned shops. There is a quant harbour with a small sandy beach to the left and pebble beach's either side one of which you can take dogs onto all year.
Fossiling is very popular and everyone should be able to find one especially on a shore walk from Lyme to Charmouth. Failing that pop into the Charmouth Heritage centre where the wardens will be happy to give you hints and tips on what to look for. You could also book onto one of their organised fossil walks.
Lyme Regis Great place all year round but best for holidays in summer.
Lifeboat week in late July is best but Regatta and Carnival week in early August can also be good. Limited parking but great accommodation.
Lyme Regis Lyme Regis has a working mill which is situated a stone's throw from the main shopping street. There is also the Leper's Well nearby.
The aquarium on the Cobb is great for viewing locally caught sea life.
If you are amazed by fossils, you will find plenty in Lyme Regis.
You can take guided walks. I recommend taking a break during Lifeboat week - what fun and entertainment!!

Small shops and cafe's. Abbotsbury is gorgeous!
Burton Bradstock Burton Bradstock is a lovely and homely place to live, the beach is 15 minutes down beautiful lanes and through meadows where if you're lucky you might see a herd of animals,(such as cows, horses e.g).
There are planty of caravan parks near by luxury farms and a big cafe at hive beach.
You can rent out cottages and stay at b&bs for reasonable prices, so what are you waiting for visit this lovely homely village.
Studland Dorset is a great county to visit, it certainly is my kind of county, though I do not live in Dorset anymore, but that does not mean I will not move back to Dorset in the future.
Come experience Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck, Studland is also all of the above including my kind of Village as well.
Go stay at either 1 or 2 Currendon cottages Studland, you will love the view from either cottage, There is the Swanage Railway, Swanage it's self, Worth Matravers, Bournemouth (Bomo), Wareham, Poole, Brownsea Island and many more to Visit.
Dorset is where my family, the Luckham's orginate from. Although we the Luckham's are indeed orginally a West Country Family from the village of Lucombe in Devon, Anyway enough about us the Luckham family and more on Dorset.
Like the famous writer Thomas Hardy who wrote Tess of the Durbivilles, Far from the Madding Crowd and other books he wrote from his home and in the countryside of Dorset.
Please enjoy our county of Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck.
Studland Studland now has World Heritage status and marks the beginning of the Jurassic coastline and path going westwards.
Studland Studland is a picturesque village in the famous "Isle of Purbeck" in Dorset and boasts probably one of if not the best beaches in the UK! It is 3 miles long and boasts a sandy/shallow shelving beach.
There are wonderful walks/bike rides in the area including Ballard Down where you can see Swanage and the English channel to the south, the Isle of Wight to the east and Studland bay/Poole harbour to the north.
There is horse riding, golf, a village shop, pub and three hotels/guesthouses plus a number of B&B's and self catering accomodation.
Studland The beach is fantastic and a REAL sandy beach.
The sea is safe for swimming and there are plenty of walks in the sand dunes.
